Surface fatigue wear widely exists, and it occurs as long a sufficient number of loading–unloading cycles are applied. Slowing down surface requires understanding the evolution damage in surface. Real surfaces composed many asperities; therefore, is important to study single asperity. A finite element model an asperity subjected cyclic elastic–plastic normal loading was developed under frictionless contact condition. The can be either completely or partially unloaded cycle. For sake completeness, both cases were investigated present study. multiaxial Fatemi-Socie criterion adopted evaluate elastic shakedown state, which achieved after several cycles. case complete unloading, severe confined subsurface ridge starting from edge maximum loaded area. shape volume particles predicted based on fundamentally valid assumption. partial much milder. Finally, potential research directions expand current suggested.
